    Abstract: Conventional ceramic processes consume large amounts of energy and resources as well as produce questionable emissions to the atmosphere. The geopolymeric processes are carried out at low temperatures with coal fly ashes as main raw material, being its non-hazardous waste definition currently questioned. The geopolymeric processes have been mainly investigated as cementitious products. Due to the use of low temperatures (less energy consumption) and utilization of waste (coal fly ash), main premises of the circular economy, the geopolymeric processes could be a good technology in ceramic processes. Thus, the aim of this paper is to investigate the illite clay-coal fly ash based geopolymer formation.

    Abstract: This study evaluates the use of the LCA methodology to quantify the environmental implications of incorporating Waelz slag as substitute of clay in the production of standard bricks. The results show that the environmental impacts associated with the brick containing Waelz slag are lower than those estimated for the conventional brick. This was observed in all life cycle stages. Besides, resources is the category most affected during life cycle of both bricks.

    Abstract: The objective of this research is to study the effect of pH on the release of trace pollutants from alternative ceramics fired at different temperatures using equilibrium standardized leaching tests. The results indicate that combining leaching test results and geochemical modelling provided insight in the mechanisms and prediction of trace metals leaching of alternative ceramics.

    Abstract: Processing parameters, firing rate and firing temperature, as well as the raw materials effects on the leaching behavior of alternative ceramics containing 40% of Waelz slag, as alternative resource, were assessed in three ceramic processes. The results showed that the leaching behaviour of Cr and Mo seems to be divided into two different steps; the first one at low temperatures where the leaching depends more upon the solubility of chromates and molybdates. In the second step, the leaching decreases drastically due to vitrification. Results shows that the faster the firing processes is carried out the lower mobility of critical elements.

    Abstract: The main pollutant release of stabilised electric arc furnace dust has been studied using column leaching tests at field-scale. The pH value and the concentration of Cd, Mo, Pb and Sb have been analysed in the leachates. Two mathematical models have been used to explain the experimental results. A model based on continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) considering that the leaching behavior is mainly due to variations in the chemical conditions; and a second model based on the advection-dispersion procedure. The best results have been obtained taking into account not only the mass transport of the pollutants from the solid to the liquid phase but also the resistance of the mass transfer into the solid phase.

    Abstract: In this work, the emissions of CO2, SO2, HCl and HF during three thermal treatments of three traditional clays and two alternative resources have been assessed using mass balance and evolved gas analysis (EGA) techniques. The effects of raw materials composition, firing rate and temperature on the release of these air pollutants were investigated. CO2 emissions are rather related to the carbon content in the raw materials than to the firing conditions, while the emissions of acid compounds are influenced by both parameters.

The study demonstrates that the constraint mixture design is suitable to predict the environmental behaviour of any studied mixture).

    Abstract: In this work the effect of using foundry sand and Waelz slag as ceramic resources on the technical end-products properties was evaluated by mixture design of experiments (MDoE). Clay/foundry sand/Waelz slag mixtures were proposed and the bodies obtained according to three firing cycles employed in industry for the manufacturing of face-bricks, wall-bricks and roof tiles. Then they were technically characterized for firing shrinkage, water absorption and flexural strength determination. The properties values were modeled, and the model checked by proposing two new mixtures points. The results showed the relevance of the mixture composition on the final product properties, and the suitability of the model to predict the sample behavior by using only the amounts of raw materials considered.

    Abstract: The global environmental impact of industrial production has increasing due to the scarcity of raw materials and the large amount of waste generated. Ecoinnovation promotes integrated initiatives such as closed-loop production by the incorporation of waste flows on industrial processes as substitutes of raw materials. The clay-based ceramic industry is considered a proper alternative for solid waste incorporation due to the immobilization in the ceramic matrix of some potentially toxic metals contained in the waste after the firing process. This work presents an updated review of available literature on the potential incorporation of different solid wastes in ceramics. The industrial wastes were classified according to the European Waste List (EWC) and the role played by the waste in the ceramic has been also studied. According to this review numerous kinds of wastes have being successfully incorporated into clayey ceramics; in some cases, this incorporation has proved to be technological acceptable and environmentally friendly.
