Two new papers have been published as result of doctoral thesis of Dra. Marta Revilla from SNIACE Company. The Thesis was the first doctoral thesis with Industrial Mention at the University of Cantabria obtaining four scientific papers in high scientific level journals.

The articles mentioned here show a new methodology to optimize the operational conditions of an industrial wastewater treatment plant using a biofilm activated sludge (BAS) process in four steps by combining dynamic simulation techniques with non-linear multicriteria optimization methods. The works allow obtaining optimal solutions of the process variables under industrial plant operative decision making criteria, economic and environmental evaluation criteria.

The methodology is implemented in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant for a cellulose and viscose fibre mill, obtaining (i) improvement of the effluent quality index (Kg pollution/m3) up to 62% and, (ii) decrease the operating cost index (€/m3) of the process up to 30% respect the regular working operational conditions of the plant, and (iii) avoiding risks of bulking, pin-point floc and rising sludge.
