Last October 20th, Prof. Javier Viguri has participated in the MC1 meeting of the CA12219 COST Action “Developing new genetic tools for bioassessment of aquatic ecosystems in Europe” (DNAqua-Net) in Brussels. The main goal of DNAqua-Net is "To advance the application of DNA-tools for biodiversity assessments and develop a roadmap to include these in standardized ecological assessments of aquatic ecosystems in Europe and beyond.“ During the meeting, the election of Chair and a Vice-Chair for the duration of the Action, the planning of the Action strategy to achieve a high impact, the working group’s structure, the deliverables to the Objectives in the MoU, the work and budget plan for the 1st Grant Period have been decided.

El viernes 30 de Septiembre el Gupo GER ha participado en la Noche Europea de l@s investigador@s. Este es un evento europeo de divulgación científica que tiene lugar simultanamente en unas 300 ciudades de 24 países europeos y vecinos. El grupo GER ha mostrado diversos talleres en la Plaza Pombo de Santander, dentro de la actividad “Dialoga con la Ciencia, Dialoga con un Científico”, adaptados para personas de todas las edades. Este año cientos de personas han tenido la oportunidad de disfrutar de talleres relacionados con la acidificación marina, con la valorización de residuos industriales en ceramicos y con la actividad de biorefineria. Ana Andres Payán participated in the 6th International EuCheMS 2016 Chemistry Congress, in Seville, Spain, 11-15th September 2016 (http://euchems-seville2016.eu/) organized by ANQUE and EuCheMS. During the Congress was signed the “Seville International Declaration of Chemistry 2016”, that highlights the major role of the scientists, researchers, teachers, professionals and business people dedicated to chemistry in providing suitable solutions to global challenges in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the UN. Ana Andres, sponsored by SOLVAY Torrelavega, attended the Industrial Program Solvay session called “Impact of Supramolecular Chemistry on Industrial Applications in Formulation and Material Science” held on Thursday 15th was coordinated by Caroll Vergelati, Solvay Researcher and Mario Pinho Branco, from Solvay Business Services.

From 2nd - 12th August 2016, Berta Galan and Javier Viguri have received the course entitled “Professional Development in English Medium Instruction-EMI”, in DCU Language Services, at Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland. For two weeks, they attended a first class academic, social and cultural experience. The program develops the language skills (speaking, listening, writing and presentation), the academic language, the use of technology and different teaching methodologies within the context EMI. Several practice sessions (Teaching Practice) allowed the application of the concepts developed during the course. The course has been funded under the II Call for "Aid for Training of PDI of the University of Cantabria to Teach in English (March 17, 2016)", of the Language Training Area, Vicerectorate for Internationalization.

A recent open access review paper has been published in the Journal Materials. (Impact Factor: 2.728) The paper investigates the main detoxification processes in lignocellulosic biomass for biorefinery purposes. This work has been carried out with the collaboration of Edmond Maican at the Politehnica University of Bucharest and Herbert Sixta at Aalto University by means of a short research stay of Alberto Coz at this institution Alberto Coz, Tamara Llano, Eva Cifrián, Javier Viguri, Edmond Maican and Herbert Sixta. The research group GER, in its training, exchange and internationalization activities, is involved in the 2016 edition of the University of Cantabria Summer Courses by the active participation in the courses taking place in Suances (Cantabria) coordinated by Dra. Ana Andres Payan from QuIPRe Department. Two courses are related to circular economy: the course “MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES TOWARDS A ZERO WASTE” (27 June-1 July) organized by Eva Cifrian Bemposta from GER group and Carlos Diaz García from Directorate General of Environment of the Government of Cantabria, and the course "SUSTAINABILITY IN BUILDING INDUSTRY (4-6 July) conducted by Dr. Elena Dosal Viñas from GER group and Dr. Carlos Thomas Garcia, from LADICIM, UC. These courses are aimed to bring the students and professional the latest developments in the evolution towards a circular economy and to sustainable practices, which are essential for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

Carlos Arce, Ana Isabel Portilla y Alberto Coz have participated in the last meeting (48th month meeting) of the BRIGIT European Project “New tailor-made biopolymers produced from lignocellulosic sugars waste for highly demanding fire-resistant applications', in Torino, Italy. BRIGIT aims to develop a cost-competitive and environmentally friendly continuous process to produce biopolymers (polyhydroxybutyrate, PHB, and succinate-based biopolyesters, PBS-Poly-Butylene-Succinate) from waste-derived lignocelullosic sugar feedstock liquor of wood sulphite pulping process. 16 partners from 11 countries participate in the project. The meeting was placed in Bath, UK, from 24th to 25th, January, 2016.  http://www.brigit-project.eu/

Ana Andrés and Juan Dacuba have participated actively in the WasteEng 2016: 6th International Conference on Engineering for Waste and Biomass Valorisation, in Albi, France, from May 23–26 2016, (http://www.wasteeng2016.org/). Ana Andrés, member of the Scientific Committee of the WasteEng 2016 and Juan Dacuba, have presented the Poster and Oral Flash work entitled “Leaching Behavior of pollutants from Alkaline-Activated Illite Clay-Coal Fly Ash Formulations incorporating Electric Arc Furnace Dust” in collaboration with the research group DIOPMA of the Prof. J.M. Chimenos, from University of Barcelona.

Berta Galán and Marta Revilla are participating actively in the LET 2016 International Conference, in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, 13–16 June 2016 (http://www.let2016.org/en). This IWA iniciative is devoted to innovation in the field of water technology, allowing to bring research and development to rapid practical application. Berta and Marta presented two Posters entitled “Optimization of BAS treatment plant using an integrated model: Applications to wastewater from pulp and viscose industry” and “Environmental and economic benefits of combined domestic and viscose-cellulose wastewaters using BAS process”

El próximo 27 de Junio dará comienzo el curso de verano "Estrategias de gestión hacia un Residuo Cero" que se extenderá hasta el 1 de Julio. Este curso está enmarcado dentro del programa de Cursos de Verano de la Universidad de Cantabria y está codirigido por Eva Cifrian de la Universidad de Cantabria y Carlos Díaz de la Dirección General de Medio Ambiente del Gobierno de Cantabria. En el curso se tratarán temas como las diferentes iniciativas puestas en marcha en sistemas integrales de gestión de residuos, y llevadas a cabo o proyectadas tanto en el ámbito industrial como en el de los residuos domésticos. Se hará especial hincapié en las principales iniciativas llevadas a cabo en la región y en las planificadas para los próximos años.
