Alberto Coz has participated in the 42th Month Meeting of the BRIGIT European Project “New tailor-made biopolymers produced from lignocellulosic sugars waste for highly demanding fire-resistant applications'. BRIGIT aims to develop a cost-competitive and environmentally friendly continuous process to produce biopolymers (polyhydroxybutyrate, PHB, and succinate-based biopolyesters, PBS-Poly-Butylene-Succinate) from waste-derived lignocelullosic sugar feedstock liquor of wood sulphite pulping process. 16 partners from 11 countries participate in the project. The meeting was placed in Bath, UK, from 24th to 25th, January, 2016. http://www.brigit-project.eu/.

In addition to the BRIGIT meeting, Alberto Coz has visited Imperial College London (contact: Chris Cheeseman) together with the laboratories of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University College London (contact: Paul Hellier) to continue and open the collaboration with both institutions.

El día 8 de Febrero de 2016 a las 11:00 h en el Salón de Actos de la ETSIIT de la UC, tendrá lugar el acto público de defensa de la Tesis Doctoral: "Mejoras en un Proceso de Pasteado al Sulfito para el Aprovechamiento de Carbohidratos dentro del concepto de Biorrefinería/ Developments in a sulphite pulping process for the valorisation of its carbohydrate resources within the biorefinery concept ".

La tesis estará presentada por Dña. Tamara Llano Astuy y dirigida por el Dr. Alberto Coz Fernández pertenecientes al grupo de I+D+i GER de la UC. La tesis Doctoral se ha realizado en las instalaciones de la empresa Snice y financiado a través del Proyecto Eucafuel, del Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación y del Proyecto BRIGIT del Septimo Programa marco de la Unión Europea.

Ana Andres and Maria Coronado from GER Research Group have published two papers with International collaboration, in Journals with Impact Factor Q1 in Environmental Sciences Category (positions 13 and 24 of 223); one of them in collaboration with Prof. Chris Cheeseman, from Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College London, and other one in collaboration with Prof. Ana Maria Segadães, Department of Materials and Ceramics Engineering (CICECO), University of Aveiro.These works use a different aproach to investigate the potential use of foundry sand dust and Waelz slag as novel resource in the ceramic industry. The research was performed under the framework of the Spanish Education and Science Ministry, Project CTM2009-11303 with Maria Coronado as FPI fellowship of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.

The work in Journal of Cleaner Production characterizes the acid gas emissions from three ceramic processes, containing foundry sand dust and Waelz slag as alternative raw materials, at laboratory scale by the combination of different analytical techniques such as DSC, XRD, EGA, FUS-ICP, ISE, INAA and FUS-IR that traditionally have been used in materials characterization. The work published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, assess and models the leaching behavior of potentially hazardous metals from three different clay-based industrial ceramic products (wall bricks, roof tiles, and face bricks) containing foundry sand dust and Waelz slag as alternative raw materials.

El pasado 27 de Febrero de 2016 el profesor Ignacio E. Grossmann fue investido Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Cantabria. Ignacio Grossman es Professor of Chemical Engineering y dirige el Center for Advanced Process Decision-making at Universidad Carnegie Mellon (Pittsburgh, EEUU). Desde la estancia de la Dra. Berta Galan en 1992 el Grupo GER ha mantenido una constante colaboración con el Prof. Grossman que se ha traducido en la publicación conjunta de artículos de elevado impacto científico, comunicaciones a congresos y estancias de investigación.

El pasado lunes 18 de Enero de 2016 tuvo lugar el acto público de defensa de la Tesis Doctoral: "Propuesta de Estrategias de Gestión de Residuos de Construcción y Demolición (RCDs) mediante el uso de Herramientas de Toma de Decisiones/ Towards an improved framework for Construction and Demolition Waste Management (C&DW) using Decision Support Tools". La tesis presentada por Dña. Elena Dosal Viñas y dirigida por las Dras. Ana Andres Payán y Berta Galán Corta, pertenecientes al grupo de I+D+i GER de la UC, se ha realizado en el marco de diferentes proyectos de colaboración entre la Consejería de Medio Ambiente del Gobierno de Cantabria y la Universidad de Cantabria.

La tesis Doctoral se ha realizado en el marco de diferentes proyectos de colaboración/contratos entre la Consejería de Medio Ambiente del Gobierno de Cantabria y la Universidad de Cantabria. La Tesis Doctoral con Mención Internacional será defendida ante el Professor Dr. Fernando Castro de la Universidad de Minho, Portugal, la Dra. Pastora Bello, de la Universidad de Santiago de Compostela y el Professor Dr. Javier R. Viguri, de la UC.

Alberto Coz has participated actively in the ISB-INMA TEH 2015 International Symposium, in Bucharest, Romania, from 29th October until 31st October, 2015 (http://isb.pub.ro/isbinmateh.html). The aim of the Symposiums was to present the latest scientific results on all aspects of research, design and development work in the field of mechanics, environmental engineering, renewable energy sources, agricultural engineering and sustainable agriculture. Furthermore, during the Conference, a Brokerage session for future cooperation possibilities between academy and different companies was carried out.

On Wednesday November 4th, Prof. Monika Olsson has participate at the ETSIIT in the Internationalization seminar entitled “Sea Farm Project”. This seminar is part of the activities that prof. Olsson has been carried out at the University of Cantabria (UC) as part of the Internationalization Project 2014/2015 KTH-UC of the Research Group GER granted by the Internationalization Section of the UC.

The work of Llano et al., 2015 in the Open Access Journal of Chemistry, shows the application of the summative analysis in conjunction with pulp parameters that highlights process guidelines and valorization alternatives towards the transformation of the traditional sulfite pulp mill into a lignocellulosic biorefinery; this work is within the BRIGIT European Project “New tailor-made biopolymers produced from lignocellulosic sugars waste for highly demanding fire-resistant applications”. http://www.brigit-project.eu/ . The aim of the paper of Martin-Torre et al., 2015 is to develop a new generalised kinetic mathematical model that allows estimation of the kinetic constants of the hypothesised release mechanism of Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cu, Cr and As from contaminated marine sediment as a function of the pH during the pH-static leaching test with continuous pH control; this work is an I+D+I result from the CTM2011-28437-C02-01 Project (Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness).
