The assistant professor Dr. Tamara Llano has recently published two articles in the open access journals Energies and Biotechnology Reports, in collaboration with Dr. Natalia Quijorna and the associated professors Dr. Ana Andrés and Dr. Alberto Coz:

  • Llano, T., Quijorna, N., Coz, A. 2017. Detoxification of a Lignocellulosic Waste from a Pulp Mill to Enhance Its Fermentation Prospects. Energies, 10, 348-365.
  • Llano, T., Quijorna, N., Andrés, A., Coz, A. 2017. Sugar, acid and furfural quantification in a sulphite pulp mill: Feedstock, product and hydrolysate analysis by HPLC/RID. Biotechnology Reports, 15, 75-83.

The first paper applies different detoxification methods for inhibitors removal of lignocellulosic hydrolysates. Evaporation, overliming, ionic exchange resins and adsorption were successfully considered. The second paper includes four chromatographic methods for sugars analysis and degradations compounds i.e. weak acids and furfurals were developed. Such methods are suitable for lignocellulosic biomass, lignocellulosic hydrolysates and cellulose pulps. Icon Washbasin from Bathco Company, is Winner in Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design Category, 2016 - 2017, in A' Design Award & Competition.

The Bathco design team, in collaboration with the Green Engineering & Research Group at the University of Cantabria, have participated in the production of the innovative product ICON WASBASIN. The ICON is made in materials that offer real benefits to the environment. In particular, the washbasin made with a new generation material: it is created from recycled materials at low temperatures, in a process that reduces the consumption of raw materials, reduces the CO2 emissions and save energy.

The challenge of the de new design was to obtain a product that perfectly combined a cutting-edge design and the use of materials that were totally sustainable and environmentally-friendly. With Icon, this equilibrium was achieved through the development of two pieces that represent an homage to nature. First, the wood of the furniture element was extracted in a totally sustainable way; second, the washbasin is made from recycled materials.

El grupo de investigación GER del departamento de Química e Ingeniería de Procesos y Recursos de la Universidad de Cantabria ha participado en diversos actos de divulgación científica, entre ellos el acto Pint of Science que ha tenido lugar en Santander, los días 15 al 17 de mayo.

Berta Galan y Javier Viguri visitaron el pasado 31 de Marzo las instalaciones de la empresa DTS OABE situada en Orozco, Bizkaia, invitados por el Dr. D. Roberto Fañanas San Anton. La empresa desarrolla, fabrica y comercializa productos biocidas para la Sanidad Ambiental y Alimentaria, Control de Legionela y Protección de la madera, disponiendo de un sistema de gestión de Ecodiseño bajo la norma UNE-EN ISO 14006:2011. Roberto Fañanas es colaborador asiduo del grupo de investigación GER, participando como ponente de seminarios y charlas sobre Diseño de Producto, en el marco tanto de la asignatura optativa del Grado en Ingeniería Química “Product Design Project”, como en el Master en Investigación en Ingeniería Industrial de la Universidad de Cantabria.
