Cristina Rueda Ruiz

Received the PhD in Chemical Engineering and Processes with international mention in 2016 from the University of Cantabria with the thesis titled 'Integrated Forest Biorefiney from Acid Sulfite Pulping. Simulation and valorization opportunities'. At present, she is working for a multinational company based in Santander but still involved in pulp & paper waste valorization research, collaborating with the Chemistry and Process & Resources Engineering Department as well as with École Polythechnique de Montreal (Canada). She spent 6 months in 2013 and 2014 in Montreal for developing a simulation model of a wood pulping mill by the sulfite process on Aspen Plus and Aspen Custom Modeler software. Her research interest are focused on chemical characterization of lignocellulosic materials, sulfite pulping chemistry and technology, kinetic modeling of wood components reactions in pulping, process simulation by specific software and valorization of byproducts from pulp & paper industry.

Recibió el título de Doctora en Ingeniería Química y de Procesos con mención internacional en 2016 por la Universidad Cantabria por su tesis doctoral titulada 'Biorefinería forestal integrada a partir del proceso al sulfito ácido. Simulación y vías de valorización'. Actualmente está trabajando en una multinacional con sede en Santander pero sigue involucrada en la investigación de la valorización de residuos de la industria de la pasta de papel en colaboración con el Departamento de Química e Ingeniería de Procesos y Recursos (QuIPRe) y la École Polytechnique de Montréal (Canadá). En éste último lugar, realizó dos estancias durante 2013 y 2014 para desarrollar un modelo de simulación del proceso al sulfito de fabricación de pasta de papel mediante el software Aspen Plus y Aspen Custom Modeler. Sus intereses de investigación se centran en la caracterización de materiales lignocelulósicos, tecnología y química del proceso al sulfito, modelado cinético de las reacciones de los componentes de la madera en procesos de pasteado, simulación de procesos mediante software especializado y valorización de los subproductos del proceso de pasteado.

    Abstract: The contribution shows the approaches to valorize the main compounds of the spent sulfite liquor from digestion process: (i) improving delignification step of the wood chips avoiding sugar denaturalization and the inhibitor compounds for the next fermentation processes, and (ii) completing the depolymerization of the carbohydrate polymers, obtaining the same quality of dissolving pulp.

    Abstract: The first aim of this work is the characterization of these two types of wood and to compare the obtained results with others found in literature. The second goal of this work is to study and to compare the behavior of these two species of wood in the acid sulfite process, analyzing the main expected properties of the resultant product (dissolving pulp) and waste (spent sulfite liquor).

    Abstract: The aim of this work is to study the main digestion variables, dwell time, temperature, ramp rate, SO2 content and liquor/wood ratio which affect the delignification process of hardwood chips to obtain dissolving pulp in order to develop a statistical model with all these variables and optimize the quantity of total fermentable sugars and lignosulphonates presented in spent sulfite liquors using GAMS software.

    Abstract: The aim of this work is to study the sugar and inhibitor characterization of the obtained liquor in different digestion conditions in order to improve the fermentation process. Acid sulfite pulping process has been studied in 1-liter reactors at laboratory scale. In this case, sulfite pulp is produced by a calcium magnesium bisulfite process based on eucalyptus wood at high temperature and pressure conditions in order to separate the fibers from lignin. Sugars and inhibitors have been analyzed by liquid chromatographic technique with refractive index detector.

    Abstract: In this work, several laboratory cooking experiments, with Eucalyptus globulus and acidic magnesium sulfite as raw materials, have been done in order to determine the optimal conditions (temperature and pressure cycle) to transform a paper-grade pulping process into a dissolving pulping process and to compare the characteristics of the obtained liquor towards its valorization. The quality parameters of pulp product in both cases (paper and dissolving grade) have been monitored together with the physical and chemical properties of the liquor. An increase of the total sugar content has been observed in the dissolving process giving a better option for its valorization in bioethanol.

    Abstract: The aim of this work is the study of acid hydrolysis of the spent sulfite liquor at different conditions at laboratory scale in order to obtain fermentable sugars. The kind and concentration of acid, temperature and time of the process have been studied as process variables in the reactors based on previous studies. The obtained results give the optimal conditions of the acid hydrolysis for the valorization of this kind of lignocellulosic waste in bioethanol.

    Abstract: Because interest in use of lignocellulosic waste for bioconversion to fuels and chemicals is increasing, a new laboratory for the study of the digestion and acid hydrolysis has been developed. The aim of this paper is to design and implement this new laboratory with the means to investigate the integrated use of hardwood chips, and their transformation into alpha-cellulose (pulping), fermentable sugars for second generation bioethanol (biofuel) and lignosulfonates (lignin). The heart of the lab is a pilot plant that consists of a 30-litre digester heated indirectly through a heat exchanger. This reactor will be fed with wood chips. Furthermore, in this work the main analytical equipment for the characterization of the raw material and obtained products has been studied.
